RESET YOUR RELATIONSHIP TO TECH


"Nomophobia", anxiety when separated from our device, is now taken as normal. In fact it is a symptom of withdrawal––but from a behavior rather than a substance. Technology addiction is real and pervasive: How can we minimize the adverse effects of technology while maximizing its benefits?

The human brain evolved to become the most refined information processor in the history of existence. While it can be momentarily stimulated by short-form communications, it thrives on the richness of face-to-face interaction. Due to the mistaken assumption that likes, emojis, tweets, and texts can somehow suffice, millions of people––younger generations most especially––are now suffering to devastating effect.

Using the theory of digital minimalism, high-impact experiential learning, and contemplative pedagogy, this unique 8-week course demonstrates that we can overcome addiction to our smartphones, screens, and devices; break out of the attention economy; and reclaim our relationship to technology. The course takes distraction and communication as its primary targets, and works in peer groups to collaboratively design and implement behavioral changes that foster wellbeing.

The course is designed and led by Dan Hirshberg, PhD, SŌTERIC's founder and Executive Director, who developed the curriculum while he was a Visiting Scholar at the University of Virginia's Contemplative Sciences Center (CSC). CSC is a world leader for contemplative pedagogy in public education.

At this time, INTERFACE is only offered in-person at our Boulder studio. In the future we will offer teacher trainings so the curriculum can be accessed directly within educational institutions.
